Campfire Grills - Choosing The Right Grill

Basic Campire Grill setupI’m sure we can all agree one of the most memorable and exciting parts of going camping is sitting down after having a great day and enjoying some delicious food prepared over a campfire grill. There is nothing quite like the taste of food cooked over an open fire.

There are many types of campfire grills that can be used whilst cooking food over a fire and we can hopefully give you some ideas and advice in choosing the correct campfire grill within this article.

What campfire grill plans are there?

There are a few options for campfires, some are basic and some are more advanced and cost more money. Here are some campfire grill plans below:

A Coleman Stove or Gas Grill

Well if you camp on a regular basis you may want to invest in a Coleman stove or some kind of gas grill. With these two options you have the most control over your cooking. You can start it up with little effort using the click of a button or twist of a knob and you can then determine how high or low you want your cooking flame giving you that perfect cooking environment for your sausages or burgers.

A Do it Yourself Campfire Grill

You may think a Coleman stove or gas grill is cheating a bit though and decide to go for the more back to basics options and build your own campfire and grill setup. All you basically need is a safe area with plenty of space. Ensure there is enough space for the fire and nothing will catch alight.

For fuelling the fire you may use some charcoal you brought or use some nearby wood. The best type of wood to look for is dead wood as this is dry and free of moisture. You can also look for some kindling which is any dry dead twigs etc. Some camps or parks may provide the wood so be sure to check this out firstly also. Best thing to do before setting up your campfire is to make sure you have enough to build a decent fire with as you don’t want to be searching for more supplies half way through.

So once the fire has been built (not lit yet) you then need to set up a makeshift grill to cook on. Using some stones or bricks on either side of the fire build it up to the desired height and then lay your grill across. You can then start your campfire and begin cooking.

If you don’t have a grill you can always do the old scout cooking method and cook your food on a skewer or stick which will give you the control to move the stick up and down etc to cook your food the way you want it.

A PreMade Campfire Grill

One of the best and most convenient options is a campfire grill that you buy from any good camping or outdoor shops. Basically made of metal and steel its all set to go, you can just add some coal, light it up and as they say bobs your uncle.

There are some different features that these sets have and you should think about. To find out more check out adjustable campfire grills and tripod campfire grills.

Some points to keep in mind when buying a campfire grill

You should think about the size of grill you are taking with you on your camping trips, is it too big or too small. The size will also determine how you will you transport also. Another point with transport is does the set up have its own carry case or not.

You also need to keep in mind how easy the grill will be to clean. I’m sure you don’t want to spend a long period of your trip cleaning your grill before packing it up and heading off again.

The type of campfire grill you get may also determine what you want to buy. Some grills have a one inch raised edge which is pretty cool as this can stop stuff rolling off the edge of your campfire grill and into the fire. Some grills also have two tiers which enable you to move cooked stuff out the way of the flames/heat but allow it still to stay warm.
